Trust made beneficiary at Football Writers’ Association Midlands awards

May 8, 2024

Our thanks to the Football Writers’ Association who made the Trust the beneficiary of their annual Midlands awards dinner in Birmingham last week.

Our Founder and Chair, Julia Regis, was on hand to present the raffle prizes from which all proceeds went to the Trust.
Julia was joined by trustees Terry Angus, Duncan Jones and Martin Swain for the event which saw guests from the region’s football scene join together for a celebration of the season’s achievements.

There was a special focus on some old opponents of Cyrille as the luncheon celebrated Aston Villa’s 1981/82 domestic and European championship double with Dennis Mortimer, Kenny Swain and Gary Shaw recalling their memories of that era.

And a man with whom Cyrille was so famously associated, his old Albion manager Ron Atkinson, also took to the stage for a Q&A with compere Jackie Oatley.

“It was a wonderful celebration of the Midland football scene and we were extremely grateful for the football writers to highlight the Trust’s work in front of so many of Cyrille’s peers and contemporaries,” said Julia.

For the record the big prizes from the journos were also dominated by Villa – Unai Emery and Ollie Watkins taking the men’s manager and player of the year and Carla Ward and Rachel Daly repeating the achievement in the women’s game.

Our thanks to all involved.
