My mother held a strong Christian faith throughout her life, which she tried to instil in us as children, when we were growing up. As the teenage years took over and I became a professional player at the age of 19, my life changed enormously, the foundation of my belief in God was heading for a challenge.
The death of my dear friend Laurie Cunningham, when he was playing for Real Madrid in Spain, acted as a real 'wake-up' call for me. Especially as two years before Laurie died, he and I were involved in a very similar incident in Spain, but we walked away with our lives intact. My footballing lifestyle was also affecting my family in a very detrimental way.
After a lengthy chat with Colin Day, a local church minister, I realised God's unconditional love for me by Jesus Christ dying on a cross for my sins. By developing my relationship with Jesus through prayer, meditation and application, my faith grows deeper. As a born again Christian I'm continually renewing my mind and changing my behaviour, according to God's word (The Bible). My spiritual journey continues daily and I'm forever thankful for God's provision and faithfulness.
